Since the arrival of the United States Navy Ship (USNS) Comfort on Tuesday (19 Jan), the medical staff on board has received over 250 patients and performed more than 100 surgeries with the assistance of state-of-the-art medical equipment. The floating hospital has seen non-stop action involving patients who have multiple fractures, head injuries and gaping wounds.Lieutenant Commander Mill Etienne, a Haitian-American neurosurgeon, is one of 1,100 doctors, nurses and support staff aboard the Comfort.

Etienne said that many of the patients he has seen had been trapped for several days under the rubble without treatment, causing "crushed syndrome", an untreated injury which can foster disease and is often fatal.
