Mathew Zedwick received the Silver Star for Gallantry for his actions after an improvised explosive device attack on the Taji Highway North of Baghdad, Iraq in June of 2004. Patrols in Iraq were susceptible to several types of attack, but perhaps none more common or deadly than the Improvised Explosive Device or IED. More often than not they were a dramatic and effective precursor to an ambush as well. Such was the case when the Humvee Mathew Zedwick was in struck an IED. The vehicle was decimated and the other occupant was left unconscious and injured. Mathew immediately exited the vehicle and ran around it to pull his injured partner to safety. He then returned to the vehicle to recover communications equipment and weapons.
