Handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when ... 1:30
After surviving the Pearl Harbor sneak attack on board the USS Whitney, Leavelle could not have dreamed that he would once again be at the center of one of America’s darkest episodes. On November 24, 1963, he was escorting a prisoner from the basement jail in Dallas. Leavelle was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of killing John F. Kennedy, when Jack Ruby rushed forward to fatally wound Oswald. “So, that was another day of infamy, if you so want to describe it”, he says. The shooting was broadcast live, with images that many Americans can never forget.
